Week 1: Soft Pretzels

Last week, I started trying out a few different recipes from all over the world. However, most of the recipes I will be sharing with you are from America. These recipes are some that we are accustomed to and most-likely have tasted before. The recipe I would like to share with you today is the traditional Soft Pretzels that you have probably had at Auntie Anne’s pretzels. You can leave your pretzels plain, or experiment with different stuffing and toppings. Some stuff you could stuff in your pretzels are; chocolate chips, cheese, pepperoni, sauce, etc… Some stuff you can add on top of your pretzels are; salt, cinnamon sugar, butter, etc… When I tried making these pretzels the first time, it didn’t turn out so great. I didn’t keep them in the oven long enough and the chocolate in the pretzels came out because I did not seal them up very well. When I tried making them a second time, they turned out fantastic. They were perfectly cooked in the oven and had the perfect amount of chocolate, cheese, pepperoni, and salt. When I tasted my different flavored pretzels, it was wonderful. They were deliciously tasty; soft on the inside and a little crunchy on the outside. It was also a lot of fun to make my pretzels, trying out new combinations in my pretzels. Here is the recipe in case you want to try making your own soft pretzel!

Soft Pretzels
Ingredients:
            1 pkg. yeast
            1 1/2 cups warm water
            1 tsp. salt
            1 Tbs. sugar
            4 cups flour
            1 egg, beaten
            coarse salt
Directions:
1.    Measure warm water into large mixing bowl. Sprinkle in yeast and stir until it looks soft.
2.    Add salt, sugar, and flour. Mix.
3.    Knead dough 1 - 2 minutes.
4.    Take small balls of dough to roll, and twist into pretzels. Grease cookie sheets lightly. Lay twisted pretzels on greased cookie sheets. Brush pretzels with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
5.    Bake at 425° for 12 to 15 minutes.
To add stuffing; roll out dough into a snake, flatten it, place small bits of the stuffing on the dough and seal it up tight!
